MCB 525 Techniques Workshop

MCB 525 Application

About the Course

The methods of molecular biology, in particular, recombinant DNA, have transformed research in the biological and medical sciences. This technology currently influences all aspects of biological research, has far reaching applications in clinical diagnosis, and has led to economically important developments in agriculture and biotechnology.

For the seventeenth year, the Oregon State University Molecular and Cellular Biology Program will offer a two-week long workshop course to provide a hands-on introduction to molecular biological methods.MCB 525 is a professional-level and graduate training course that is offered either as a workshop course or as an Oregon State University graduate course. It begins three weeks prior to the beginning of OSU's fall term. The course requires a two-week, full-time commitment from the participants.

Techniques:

  • cloning vector manipulation
  • molecular cloning
  • the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • preparation of recombinant DNA
  • transformation of bacterial cells
  • isolation of genomic DNA
  • restriction analysis
  • real-time RT-PCR
  • site-directed mutagenesis
  • computer-aided nucleic acid and protein sequence analysis
  • synthesis of a fusion protein
  • protein expression and purification
  • Western blots

MCB 525 is a highly intensive course, requiring a full-time commitment from the participants. Activities are scheduled all day and some evenings. Classes begin in the laboratory at 9:00 a.m. In MCB 525, a formal lecture will be held at 1:00 PM each day in addition to the lab part of the course. There will be one Sunday off in the middle of the session.

Prerequisites

An up-to-date background in DNA structure and chemistry, genetics and biochemistry.

Lodging

For information on lodging in Corvallis, click here. The Gem is located across from campus and is reasonably priced.

Location

The course will be held in the Agricultural and Life Sciences building on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Corvallis is a community of 50,000 residents located in the beautiful Willamette River Valley, an hour from the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Range. Oregon's summer climate is usually warm and sunny.

Lectures Only

If you want to sit in on the lectures during the course, and if you are not taking the Lab Course, MCB 525, you may sign up to take MCB 524, the lecture portion of MCB 525. MCB 524 is offered as a 1-credit, pass/no pass fall-term course. There is no limit on enrollment. The course consists of approximately 12 one-hour lectures presented by faculty of the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program, presented daily at 1:00 PM. MCB 525 students may not take MCB 524 concurrently with MCB 525.

Workshop versus Graduate Course

8 slots will be held open for workshop participants, at a cost of $1,300 (U.S.). If these are not filled by July 31, 2008 they will be opened up to student applicants. Priority for the 16 graduate student slots will go first to MCB students. The remaining slots will go to graduate students with this course on or expected to be on their program of study, based on the date we received your registration, and then to all other graduate students.
